Oh, now I understand why I never had to do this before.

Anyway I have done it now in riot.

I would actually suggest picking good nickname first with

identify $nick_name

I did this using an IRC client, now I have moved back to riot - although
I think now I understand things a bit better I could have used riot.

Next problem: There are a huge number of posts in #linux.conf.au and the
conference hasn't even started yet :-)
