Sequencing DNA with Linux Cores and Nanopores https://linux.conf.au/schedule/presentation/133/ The most memorable talk of the entire conference for me. Thanks Martin. The Kernel Report https://linux.conf.au/schedule/presentation/146/ I always enjoy Jonathan's report. This year he spent time on how the "contribute upstream" message is starting to sink in at Google and Android. His discussion of the new Code of Conduct for Linux kernel developers was perceptive and might have got those who think they are against it to think again. The Tragedy of systemd https://linux.conf.au/schedule/presentation/156/ Benno is always opinionated, and always tells you why. His talk in the dev miniconf was good value too. Overall, the talks on community and the human impact of technology, and of the application of open source to other fields were interesting and I encourage the papers committee to welcome those as well as straight tech talks. If I may correct you slightly :) Gogole has always tried to upstream anything possible in the kernel, both because it's the right thing to do, and because keeping sets of patches is painful long term. They haven't always been accepted, wakelocks being the obvious example, but overall it's not been a problem. What has been a problem is 1) binary only drivers from some hardware vendors that are in turn used in android hardware, and the lack of ABI in linux, in turn causing android to be stuck with a version of linux and having to backport patches until that hardware dies. 2) some android vendors who have indeed modified linux on their own and not tried to upstream anything (Jon gave an example in his talk). Oh and oh course the tragedy of SystemD, Beno really surprised me, I also think that one could be labelled as "Counselling 101 for anyone who has been on a mailing list talking about Systemd" and lets face it for many of us LCA is mental health retreat ;) I think I also do not need to mention Jon Oxers talk, I was blown away as I know how complex those wheelchairs can be and just wow. I guess if anyone was going to reverse engineer a multi thousand dollar piece of equipment it was going to be Jon and his mates lol :) but yeah that talk was great because it reminds us all of how open source fundamentally changes life for people, and at the end of the day that's what many of us are passionate about not building the next app for some rich kid in Silicon Valley but fundamentally changing lives by opening up what was before a closed box :) All in all as always top level talks, - Aimee Maree Forsstrom On Mon, 4 Feb. 2019, 10:38 am Andrew Ruthven, wrote: > I have taken Steven's suggestion of a rolling LCA2019 to heart. Thanks Ryan for tracking down and uploading the stragglers, and tidying up the mirror. It's really great to have such an amazing record of the Linux.Conf.Au conference talks. For those that are wondering about still missing talks, at least for the ones I've checked, it seems like either the speaker declined the recording/materials release, so I'm assuming they either didn't get recorded or can't be uploaded; or they were last minute rescheduling and didn't get recorded (which is a risk with any last minute changes). I'm still working my way through the backlog of recordings I want to watch -- the YouTube channel has 159 recordings, of which I've probably seen about half of the ones I want to see either in person or over the last couple of weeks. (If you're looking for recommendations, #lca2019 on Twitter still has people mentioning recordings they've watched and recommending them.) I know I'm late to the party, and there are far too many talks to list that qualify as "outstanding" if I compare them to other conferences, and I am deliberately excluding the keynotes which were all stellar ? Maybe you're thinking of Matt Pattison? He did speak at the open hardware miniconf, which doesn't seem to have its schedule synchronised with the main website: http://www.openhardwareconf.org/wiki/OHMC2019 I spoke to him several times, he did work at a tech school but in Victoria, not NZ. There was a prof from a New Zealand tech school that serves about 6000 students a year, Matt (?), he had presented perhaps at the pre-conference workshop on Day-2 or Day-3, on what his school is striving towards with their limited resources. It was powerful, just as was the raffle target. I am poor with name recall and so wish I had taken a picture of his badge, and both myself and Tobias have scrutinized the conference schedule and not been able to identify him. Was he even a Matt? He did attend my Automotive IoT, sitting on the left of speaker facing room, perhaps row 2 or 3. Might you know who I am talking about or how to locate him or perhaps he too reads this chat? Message-ID: Hi! At the LCA BBQ I had a long chat to a volunteer who was interested in my thoughts on how to build an FPGA based networking switch. I however seem to have lost contact details for him. I recently came across the snabb (https://github.com/snabbco/snabb) and EasyNic (https://github.com/lukego/easynic) projects and thought he might be interested in them. If anyone knows who I'm talking about, could you forward him this email? Thanks! Tim 'mithro' Ansell -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
